About Malachite

Colours: Rich green with pale green streaks.

Hardness: 3 1/2 - 4

Malachite is unusual for its patterns of pale bands within a field of deep green colour. When malachite forms crystals, they can be shaped in the form of prisms and often grow through one another. It can be opaque or translucent and the luster of malachite can be anything from silky to vitreous. Malachite forms in areas of copper deposits.

Malachite is cut into cabochons or slabs to be used in rings, necklaces, brooches, and in art objects. Though not a precious stone, its vibrant colour is highly prized.
