Hematite is opaque, and comes in a variety of colours from black to red. Its
luster can be dull or metallic, and it generally forms in igneous rocks. An
interesting fact about Hematite is that it can become magnetic when exposed
to high temperatures. Specular Hematite (seen at right) has a bright metallic
luster and contains prismatic quartz crystals. The Hexagonal Hematite (seen
above) forms in tabular crystals and may grow as rosettes, in which case they
are known as iron roses. Hematite is an oxide, composed of the elements iron
and oxygen.Whether it is cut in cabochons or faceted, Hematite is a highly valued stone in the jewelry and bead trade. Its mirror-like surface is truly a wonder and is a fine addition to any gem collection. |
