The garnet family comprises a very large group of related silicates in a tremendous array of colours. The main varieties
used in the the gemstone trade are Pyrope, Almandine and Rhodolite in the red-purple spectrum. Garnets are mined in abundance all over
the world and may be found set in the crowns and ornaments of royalty. Garnets may either be faceted or cut into cabochons called carbuncles.
Pyrope derives its name from the Greek Pyropos , or, fire-eyed.
